First Sunday of the Month - Communion. Much help is needed this Sunday, March 7. Jim T. and Denise are both off. So we are in need of a Lighting Director and another Camera Operator.

If you also volunteer as an usher, please send me when you serve (months and service), but also try to find your own replacement as well. Thanks.

Tech News February 1-7, 2010

It’s another busy week here at FUMC Brandon.

Saturday February 6 Funeral – 11 a.m.

If you were at Sunday’s a.m. services, you heard that we will be hosting a funeral for a fallen soldier this Saturday. We expect this to be a major regional event, with people from the family, military, other churches, the media, and more. I want to have a full crew in place in order to have IMAG and potential overflow capability. I am also going to webcast the service.

  • 10 am call time – Please make sure you park at the bank parking lot to leave prime spaces available for the visitors
  • 11 am – 1 pm(?) Funeral service

Help needed this Saturday morning, etc.

I would still like some crew for this coming Saturday’s training event. There is a dance and some other “special music” that we’d like to do IMAG (cameras on screen) for. But so far I only have two, including myself. We need another video director or CG operator, AND another camera operator AND lighting to pull it off. Please e-mail me ASAP if you can help. This would be a great way to serve our fellow Methodist churches.

Saturday January 16, 9-Noon – District Leadership Training

Event features songs by out team with lower thirds, a guest a-capella quartet, and a dance.

Tech Volunteer Opportunities for October and November

This is a lot for one e-mail, but it is all important stuff!

Sunday, October 25th - A Night of Worship

It looks out of order, but if you are interested in CG or Video director for this event, rehearsals begin ThIs Wednesday at the beginning of normal choir rehearsal. Jeff is trying to get the choir out of their choir books, so he has asked us to run CG at the rehearsals. If you can help, please e-mail me ASAP!
The actual worship concert will be at 6:30, October 25th. We will need a full crew for the event.

Saturday, October 10 - Everest Pinning

Everest University's Nursing School will be holding their Pinning/graduation ceremony this coming Saturday in the Sanctuary from 2-5 p.m. It will require one tech to start up and shut down the sound and video systems, to bring up the level of the lectern mic, and to show a powerpoint presentation. It is a paid opportunity. Please reply if you are qualified.

GFU is back! Watch your e-mail for details, rehearsals are Wednesday, October 28 and Thursday, October 29, with the worship service on October 30. Another church is using our facility to record a live worship album. We may need media support, but please let me know if you're available and pencil it into your calendars. But I believe it is "not open" to attend.

Tech new for Sunday September 2 - Team B

First, thank you very much to Katie, Mike P. and our newest team member Jeff for stepping up to help on a "short" Sunday. I literally grabbed Jeff 10 minutes before the 11:00 service and said, "You should try volunteering with Tech." And he said" Okay." And I said "Okay, how about right now?" So I gave him a quick camera lesson and he did great his first time at thee 11:00 service. He'll be added to Team A on a regular basis starting October 4.

This week is Team B. Nothing unusual to note in the service order.

Willow Creek Leadership Summit
August 6 & 7 is the Willow Creek Leadership Summit Simulcast, hosted locally at Van Dyke UMC in Lutz. It is an all day (8-5) event. The church is taking a large group of leaders to the conference and spots are still available. If you lead anywhere - church, work, your family - you should go to this awesome event with Leaders from the business and church community. Contact Dan Palmer at the church office to sign up and for pricing info.

Tech T-Shirts (sort of)
A company called Midnight Oil Productions makes "Media Ministry" t-shirts and hats. The church doesn't have money to buy you all your own shirts right now, but you can order your own, if you like. Check out Media Ministry shirts (and matching hats) here. "Media ministry is like a sport. Look the part!"

Webcasting works

Great weekend at NCC. The highlight? A guy caught me between services at Union Station. It was his first visit, but he's been watching the webcast. Told me that he grew up in church but had been on a long prodigal journey. After watching a webcast he rededicated his life to Christ.

I love our webcast for a couple reasons. First of all, I feel like it's a safe way to listen to a dangerous message. There is something about watching on webcast that defuses defense mechanisms. I also think it's a great way to visit a church. You get a thin slice of what that church is like. It's a sample or taste test if you will. We're finding that more and more people watch the webcast before visiting in person. It's one of our side doors at NCC.

A learning opportunity... Monday July 6

I will be doing a video shoot Monday night at the Westlake home of Denise's student small group for an upcoming message. If you want to learn how all that stuff gets set up – lights, camera, sound, etc. – please e-mail me ASAP. It will be a "first-reply, first-serve" basis. I don't need a full crew to come with me over to the Westlake house – one or two assistants at the most.

It would be about 6 p.m. to 8-ish p.m. I could potentially pick up a student who wants to help, but probably better if you could get your parent to drive.

The more we grow...

My senior pastor, Jamie westlake, forwarded this to our staff:

…words for us to consider from Mark Batterson in the midst of our growth. What do we need to pay attention to when we are doing well? Great question. Here’s what one pastor thinks.

Just thought I'd share the ten reminders I shared at Healing Place in their staff meeting. Think of them as a gut check for growing churches. These are personal reflections on our journey @ NCC.

The more we grow...

1) ...the greater the PRIVILEGE. I never want myself or anyone on our staff to have a sense of entitlement. We're only servants--I Cor. 3:5.

2) ...the more COMPLICATED things get. Sin complicates your life in negative ways. Growth complicates your life in positive ways. Learn to thank God for complications!

3) ...the harder it is to maintain UNITY. Vision is the key to unity! The larger you get the more frequently you need to cast vision. Unity doesn't happen by default--Eph 4:3.

4) ...the better STEWARDS we need to be. Growth raises the stakes. With greater responsibility comes greater accountability.

5) ...the more ABOVE REPROACH we need to be. I Corinthians 10:23 says, "Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial." As our leadership expands, there can be an unhealthy and unholy tendency toward the permissible end of the spectrum! Guard against it. As our influence expands, leaders need to move toward the beneficial end of that spectrum!

6) ...the easier it is to exist for those who ALREADY BELONG. As a church grows it is very easy to give in to centripetal force--we become inward-focused and ingrown. The Great Commission is centrifugal--go into all the world.

7) ...the easier it is to do ministry out of MEMORY instead of ministry out of IMAGINATION. The beginning of the end for every entreprenurial organization is the moment they stop doing what got them to where they are! You need to keep making mistakes. You need to keep experimenting. Don't repeat the past. Create the future!

8) ...the more we have to remind ourselves of WHY we're doing what we're doing and WHO we're doing it for. There is a fine line between building Thy Kingdom and My Kingdom. As your circle of influence grows, you need to stay Christ-centered.

9) ...the more you have to guard your heart. As you grow, so does the target on your back. Leaders need to keep a pure heart in the midst of criticism and temptation. The blessings of God backfire when they produce pride. Stay humble.

10) ...the bigger our DREAMS need to get. The size of our dreams is one of the best barometers of spiritual maturity. People with a big God have big dreams!

Tech Training
Starting June 10, I will offer regular training on Wednesday nights 7:30-9:00 to coincide with Jeff's Choir rehearsal. Please e-mail ahead of time and let me know what position you would like training with: CG, Lights, Camera, or Video Director.

Office Assistance Needed
Janeen will be out of town next week (June 8-11). If you are available any days next week to come to the office and help make CD and DVD copies or prepare MediaShout, it would be greatly appreciated. Making the copies is actually pretty easy. Please let me know if you can help and what day, and I'll get back with you about working with my schedule.

New Cue Sheets
You've all had a turn since we adopted the new cue sheet format. Please e-mail any feedback you might have. Also, I have been forgetting to mention, but individual song sheets have been in the front pocket of each binder for "non-congregational" songs with notes about solos, etc. (i.e. offertories). I am sorry that I have been forgetting to mention it. There are also lots of other helpful notes in that pocket that are position specific.

MediaShout Version 4
I will soon be upgrading all CG computers to MediaShout 4. All current songs, etc will automatically be migrated to the new version. Training announcements to follow.

Crews and Rehearsal Schedules For April 9, 10 & 12

First, a clarification. When you receive an e-mail with [Event Reminder] in
the subject line, it is automatically generated by MemberConnect. I create
those events in advance and they automatically are sent out at the intervals
I assigned. But as we all know, things can change at the last minute.

So below are the FINAL crew assignments. Thank you to all who volunteered,
but we had more than enough help for Thursday night. I also tried to assign
people that were going to be at both services to the same position in order
to simplify rehearsal, and not confuse you (i.e. "Am I camera or spot
today?")

If you can not make rehearsal, your availability has changed, or I made a
mistake, please let me know ASAP.

Easter Sunday Crew

Palm Sunday Rehearsal

Next Wednesday, March 25 will be rehearsal for Palm Sunday, (April 5 - Team

Late arrival for camera operators is acceptable. We also need additional
crew to fill extra positions.

Easter Rehearsal

Wednesday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. is call time for Easter Rehearsal (Sunday,
April 12 - Team C). We will also be rehearsing for the Living Last Supper.
Additional crew is needed.

Living Last Supper - Maundy Thursday

And Thursday, April 9 is the return of the "Live Action" Living Last Supper,
with an updated cast featuring members of other area Methodist Churches. We
will need an extra large crew due to the need for Spot Light Operators for
this service.

First, thanks to everyone who helped on Sunday: Andrew, Mike, Dave, Hal,
Denise, and Tres. I think it made a huge improvement for me to be in the
"producer" chair and keep my eyes on the whole service. We need to try to
fill the crew this way every week.

But, this Sunday, March 15 is Team B and Bell Choir Sunday. We will be
short-handed and need help due to Jim being unavailable and needing "Camera
4" for the Bell Choir at 8&11. Also, we may need backup on CG Since Lisa is
IN The Bell Choir. So, Here are the tentative positions

Crew For Sunday February 22 - Help wanted!

This coming Sunday is Team B: Help wanted!

*I would like a third camera operator for this week due to a special guest.
The Splat Experience will be doing some performance art on a giant 8 foot by
8 foot canvas in the center of the stage. To accommodate it and get the best
shots, I am going to set up "Camera 4" on the right side of the balcony. So
we will need an extra camera operator over there to run that camera. This
will give us a cool angle of the artist, plus we will be able to see around
the canvas to see the band/orchestra and praise team.

ATTENTION MEN!

If you have not already signed up, call the church office to register for
the Momentum Event this Friday and Saturday. It is a great weekend of
worship and fellowship. It kicks off with a tailgate party on Friday Night
in the Bell Shoals Baptist Church parking lot. The night winds down about 9
or 10. Then at 8 a.m. (I think) 'ril noon, we're back for more worship and
teaching.

I'm signed up! So be there!

What are doing with your days and nights

Want to help out tech but maybe you aren't up to serving at a service or
aren't available? Help out around the office! There are a lot of tasks that
don't have to been AT a certain time, but simply BY a certain time/day. Some
can even be done at home! Training is available for everything.

CD/DVD duplication

* Label and copy original recording from Sunday
* Label and make copies of DVDs and CDs ordered
* Label and make copies of praise team practice CDs

Data processing

* Download song lyrics into MediaShout and MS Word
* Format and arrange the songs in the correct order as sung
* Occasionally, songs need to be typed out "by hand"
* Log "used discs" into register
* Log copyright information on all songs performed
* Report copyright info to reporting agency

Media Filing

* Organize and file past recordings into the archive library (read
"closet")

Graphic Design

* Create, find or take your own song background pictures
* Pick the most "fitting" background for each song
* Create eye-catching announcement graphics for the service and the
"loop"

Superbowl tech

We will need massive help on February 1 to help set up for the Super Bowl,
primarily due to the screen set-up. Here is a list of TECH resources and
where they will be acquired from. If you think something is missing, please
advise.

1. Video Projector (floater from S.H.)
2. Screen - already in B&G, need power/controller from shed
3. Long S-video or composite cables - Chapel booth has most of the long
cables now.

* We may need "barrels" if we are short. It is easier to put the tuner
by the sound and run one cable to the projector, than to put the tuner by
the projector and run two long cables to the PA.

4. Long COAX antenna cable to put antenna outside - upstairs Sanctuary
mech. room
5. Extension cords - green box from Sanctuary booth
6. Digital converter box - from Sanctuary booth (don't forget the
remote!)
7. Antenna - from Sanctuary booth
8. Sound system - need to discuss with Robin. I don't think any of us
will find the Passport adequate.

This Sunday and Training

This coming Sunday is Team A.

The will be another video played like you've seen over the past few week. We
will also have a guest speaker - Don Caldwell. And at the end of the service
there will be a time to bring your financial commitments to the altar. I
will make sure to allow the crew time to participate in this if they wish.

CG Training!

We have purchased the long overdue replacement for Prologue Sunday Plus -
Media Shout! Jay and Janeen and I have been working through the tutorials,
and this coming Sunday we will be using it for Worship. It is different that
SundayPlus, in a better way.

So, this Wednesday, in the Sanctuary we will have training from 6:30-7:30
p.m., earlier if you're available. I will have several computers available
so we can have as much "hands on" practice as possible.

If you a regularly a CG operator, I encourage you to download the demo
version from www.medishout.com <http://www.medishout.com/> and install it
on your computer (please read the minimum requirements on their site.)
Please go through the tutorials before the Wednesday training if at all
possible. It will work for 30 days.

Please attend if at all possible. If another time will work better for you,
please call me or e-mail me to set up a personal training time.

Upcoming Events

There are plenty of opportunities to serve in the coming month. Here is

* Friday, October 3 - GFU: God, Family and U service in the gym. We'll
need help with CG (PowerPoint), Lights, sound and cameras. I would like to
shoot this one in it's entirety like a service this time.
* Friday October 31 - GFU: God Family and U service in the gym. We're
having two GFUs this month, to support it and the Trunk 'n Treat. Same needs
as above plus I'd like to shoot some b-roll of the Trunk n' Treat event,
too.

Worship Service! Both of the new video systems are up and running. And I am
confident that I will have the "link" solved tomorrow morning. We will need
many extra crew members to complete the service.

Tech News and oppurtunities

We're back! The team from the DR arrived safely at TPA around 10:15, and
Katie and I were home by 11:30. It is good to be home. I will be putting
together a long form video from the pics and footage soon.

But things didn't stop around here while I was gone. There are a few big
projects on the horizon.

Sanctuary Stage Reset - July 28 & 29

Jeff and Howard are resetting/rearranging the sanctuary stage on Monday,
July 28, from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. If you are available during that time to help
move risers and equipment, it would be greatly appreciated. Help during the
Day on Tuesday, July 19, may be needed as well. Please e-mail if you can
help.

Chapel Equipment Installation - August 3 & 4

Jeff has also scheduled the following Monday, August 4, 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. for
installing the new sound and A/V gear in the chapel. I am also looking for
volunteers on Sunday August 3, from 1:30 p.m. - approx. 6 p.m. to help run
cable under the floor in the Chapel. We will run the snake through the
tunnel, and run some A/V cable under the stage for the projector and such.
Time permitting; we may begin to install equipment in the booth.

Sanctuary Lighting and Video System Reset - TBD - Tentative August 10

This project is still TBD, due to waiting on parts for the new switcher. But
it will be scheduled soon. We will be installing the new switcher, but while
we do that we will be re-arranging the positions and their locations. And
since some of the gear is trickling down to the chapel, work over there will
happen concurrently or simultaneously.

Trustees Work Day - Saturday June 14, 8-Noon.

We will be working on projects around the grounds, as well as some
construction in the chapel to help prepare for the new "booth" in the
balcony. Bring your power tools!

June 29 Patriotic Celebration "God Bless America Again"

We are still in need of crew that can make rehearsal on Wednesday June 25,
as well as services at 9:30 and 11 on June 29. Please reply ASAP!

No Stuart for VBS or July 20

Katie and I are going on the mission trip to the Dominican Republic, July
14-20. That week is VBS and I will need someone to come in from 8-noon every
day to fire up the system and possibly run CG, too. Training will be
required and perhaps we can work out several people to cover the different

I am looking for a Lighting Director and Video Director to help with the
"July 4" programs on June 29 (Team A). Any team member fro any team is
eligible. If you can make it to rehearsals Wednesdays June 18th and 25th at
7:00 p.m., as well as the two performances at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. on June
29th, please let me know.

The June 18th rehearsal will give you a chance to see and hear the show. I
will have draft cues ready fro you to make notes on. June 25th is dress
rehearsal.

Camera Training - Multiple Choices

Wednesdays, June 4, 11, and 18 - 7-9 p.m.

I will be offering camera training the next three Wednesdays at 7 p.m. We
will take 30 minutes explaining the controls of the camera, tripod, and
Camera Control Unit (CCU). Then we will have 30 minutes of "free practice"
time to have a try at shooting while the choir is rehearsing.

You must attend one of these classes before the next time your team is up.
Please RSVP so we make sure everyone gets a chance to practice.

I heard good reports from everyone regarding Sunday "sans Stuart." And a BIG
THANKS to Sue for helping to keep everything running.

Help Needed!! - Cable Pull - Saturday May 31, 2008, 9 a.m.

Much must be done before we can begin using the new cameras. I need help
running the cables through the ceilings to get them to the camera locations.
The maintenance department will help us get through some of the hard to
reach areas, and make sure we don't make too many holes (just kidding). We
will also run cables to the narthex and hallways for some big screen LCDs
that will be used to display announcements.

This is just the beginning of what will be a very busy summer for the
Technical Arts. I appreciate all of your help.

This coming Sunday will be a special treat as the Children's Ministry
presents "Son Seeker's Nation Vacation" at both 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
worship service. They are NOT providing any kids for tech this time, so we
need the full crew for all three services as we will be doing IMAG (that's
live cameras on screen for the newb's) more the majority of the latter two
services.

Sunday A.M. Crew Rotation

I am sorry for not getting the rotation out - nothing new, I know. I offer
some new options:

* If you would like to serve either more often, or not at all three
services, your only positions will be camera or may "apprentice" CG, Video
Director, or Lighting - subject to availability and crew "fullness."
* If you wish to be a Video Director, or CG Operator, you must be at
all three services.
* If you are CG, Video Director, or Lighting Director, you must be
early enough to check out your cue sheet notes before 7:30 talk through.
This way you can look for items which you might have questions on and I can
answer them during talk through.

Please e-mail me ASAP to sign up. Remember to note which services you are
available, or if you want to be "on" more often. The three week rotation,
and tentative teams are below:

* Team B - April 13 - Jim, Jay, Mark
* Team C - April 20 - Katie, Sue
* Team A - April 27 - Andrew, Ralph, and Mike Mc

Other Crews

Help is also needed with "The Rock" and Children's ministry events on Sunday
morning, as well as Wednesday afternoon and evenings. If you have a passion
for serving and building up these young volunteers, please call me.

New Opportunity!

The Music department and I are looking for a few more "Event Techs" to
assist with programs and meetings that may require additional support from
our areas. Job responsibilities may include:

* Turning on and operating sound system
* Turning on and/or setting up a video projector and related equipment
* Tearing down and putting away any of the above equipment or systems

An example might be coming in and setting up the chapel projector and sound
system for a group to watch a DVD on Saturday a.m. Training will be
required. Dates for training will be set soon.

and choice of camera shots.

Lord-One Faith" CD to listen to in order to prepare for Palm Sunday and
Easter. I am also looking for creative input on all the songs for both
weeks. E-mail or call me with your thoughts on particular songs. We need to
choose whether we will do IMAG or not, and if not, what type of visual would
you like to see.

Don Moen will probably be mostly IMAG.

Communications Road Show Begins in January

Here is a free training that Pastor Jamie has bought to my attention. I have
registered for the Orlando event. If anyone else want to go, we can car
pool.
Communications Road Show begins next January

In an effort to provide resources to local churches on a more direct basis,
Florida United Methodist Communications will be hitting the road in 2008,
offering training workshops on a variety of communication tools.

"The Communications Road Show" will visit four areas of the Florida
Conference, offering the same six workshops at each venue, designed to
assist and improve communications in a local church setting.

The Road Show's purpose is to offer people throughout the conference tips
and "best practices" on how their communications ministries can be improved.
Each Road Show stop will offer workshops for clergy and laity, church
administrators, church volunteers in communications ministry and those just
thinking about getting started.

Workshop topics include:
• Web Casting
• Getting Started with your Pod Cast
• Planning for Print
• Web Development 101
• Data Management 101
• Crisis Communication for Clergy

Each Road Show will start at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and light snacks. A brief
opening worship will be at 10 a.m., and the first round of workshops will
begin at 10:30 a.m. A lunch, available for $10, will be served from noon
until 1 p.m. (If you want lunch, you must sign up for it when you register;
payment for lunch will be collected at the door.) The second round of
workshops--the mornings offerings repeated--will start at 1 p.m. The day
will end no later than 3 p.m.

Locations of the Road Show and dates are:
• Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 - First United Methodist Church, Lake City
• Saturday, Feb. 9 - Peace United Methodist Church, Orlando
